Videogaming History, albeit roughly 40 years old, has already given a handful of examples of games worthy to be claimed as icons, thus allowing contemporary developers to pay homage to and parody them, when not both things at once as it's the case. Cthulhu saves the World unites Legend of Zelda and other early SNES RPG games with Lovecraft's work presented in an humorous way.
However, we all know how boring 16bit RPGs can be nowadays, with all that unnecessary grinding, few or none cinematics and over-cliched plots. They will always have a legion of fans behind, but it's rather difficult to lure new players into this kind of gaming. 'Cthulhu saves...' does little to remedy this, though old school players will appreciate the 'new game plus' options that boost game's replayability, ranging from new characters to additional difficulty levels. Meanwhile, you have quests to fulfill, dungeons to crawl, bosses to defeat, some Cthulhu-ish jokes and epic stats.

Gameplay can be considered better than usual, though it may not be enough, as movement feels clumsy and turn based fights lack showy FX and overall everything looks like outdated, leaving us to think that this game would have been one among many if not for its jokes here and there.
Anyway, even when this game would have been a blockbuster back in the 90s, it's never late to lose yourself into isometric graphics, witty dialogues and 16bit epicness.
