A buddy has a handgun he bought at a flea market.
I can take it and shoot it, and maybe get a good deal on it if I like it.
But... I'm not interested in buying hot guns.
So, if I call my local PD, will they run the number for me?
I'm pretty sure they will, but if they do, and it comes back hot, I'm sure I'd be
legally bound to turn it over to them.
My friend would be mad, and it would be bad ju-ju all the way around.
So, is there a website where you can run serial numbers to see if they're stolen?
Where Can I Run A Gun's Serial Number
Even if you can get results with a partial set, it is a must to have the whole serial number with you when you are doing searching so that you can verify if the information is correct. To look for the serial number of the gun, check the handle or the slide of the gun, where the number is usually embossed on. 'As long as the serial numbers were only for stolen guns, OK. And those numbers were removed when the guns were returned to thir owners.' Already have that, and have had that since the late 60s. Entry is removed as soon as the stolen gun is recovered. If something stolen has a unique, identifiable number it can be entered into NCIC. If you own a USED firearm, check out the serial number with you local PD so this doesnt happen to you!! 5 Guns to Buy Before a Potential Ban - Duration: 13:41. Iraqveteran8888 4,529,127 views.
Where Can I Run A Guns Serial Number Free
Earlsbud brings up a good point.
FN/Browning is famous for duplicate serial numbers. If a client, say, a foreign government or large police agency, wanted a certain sequence of serial numbers, FN would do it without qestion, even though they had already used that serial # sequence for another client or their commercial production.
Also, some Hi Powers and many other types of pistols, have their serial numbers on the slide, frame and barrel.
Sooooo, if you have a parts gun and the wrong ser# is run, OR if that same ser# was issued to an unrelated wanted firearm, YOU will be in for an experience that you will be able to tell your grand children about. Seriously.
Often times, if the right person at the originating agency answers the phone, these things can be ironed out. But...
Let's say that Diffington Fauntleroy was found murdered in Boston, and amongst his stolen effects was a 1954 FN Austrian Police Hi Power ser# 123456. And here you sit in Snake Navel, Arkansas with a 1964 Argentinian Contract Hi Power ser# 123456...
